Macmurray, Action and Contemplation

“withdrawal [contemplation] and return [to agency] is the full dynamic expression of the form of the personal, as a positive which includes, is constituted by and subordinates its own negative. It is a succession of positive and negative phases which, taken together, constitute the unity of a personal experience. The negative phase, therefore, depends upon, and is subordinate to, the positive, and the whole activity can only be defined through the positive. … The withdrawal is for the sake of the return; and its necessity lies in this, that it differentiates the positive phase by enriching its content. Without the negative there could be no development of the positive” (Persons in Relation ch4 ‘The Rhythm of Withdrawal and Return’ p 90))
