“withdrawal [contemplation] and return [to agency] is the full dynamic expression of the form of the personal, as a positive which includes, is constituted by and subordinates its own negative. It is a succession of positive and negative phases which, taken together, constitute the unity of a personal experience. The negative phase, therefore, depends upon, and is subordinate to, the positive, and the whole activity can only be defined through the positive. … The withdrawal is for the sake of the return; and its necessity lies in this, that it differentiates the positive phase by enriching its content.
